Time to Put the Books Away and Find a J-O-B

Summer time can be a period filled with mixed emotions for most college students. On the one hand, great, it is summer time, no more books, no more classes and party, party, party! On the other hand, no grant money, maybe having to move out of campus dorms or sublet your place and oh, goodness, having to buy your own food! Yes, summer can come as a mixed bag, both fun and work.

So where does a college student begin to find a summer job? Who will hire the student who has to leave and go back to school in the fall?

The truth is that there are a lot of options. Here are a few search tips to help you find that part time or summer time college student job.

First, there is no reason why working of the summer can be both productive and fun. When searching for your summer job consider what it is that you are going to college for. Many employers would love to find extra summer help in the form of a college or university student who is studying to do exactly the job they are hiring for. For instance, if you are studying to be a veterinarian, seek a summer job at a veterinarian’s office. The vet will be glad to see you coming especially during the summer when there is a lot of work. This method helps you also gain the experience you need to eventually do what it is that you are logging in all of those book hours for in the first place.

Another helpful tip is to be up front with potential employers. Don’t tell an employer that you will be there, slaving with his or her company forever. Tell them that you are a student and are in school. Chances are if you are honest you will find a few more employers who respect the fact that you are headed back to school and will even encourage you along the way. In doing this you also leave the door open to return the next summer. There are some college students who work their summer jobs through the entire four years of college and then, if you are lucky you also stand the chance to get hired permanently after college is over.

Finally, try and find a job that can pan out during the school year as well. Offer your potential new employer a piece of you while you are in school, say on the weekends. This will show an employer that you are interested in working and that even during the school year you can step up. Employers who are searching for someone to fill that summer position are few and far in between any more so it is important that you create a good relation ship with potential employers so that you don’t have that summer job for just that first year but also for subsequent years as well.
